Public Poetry Reading Series In-Person
Poetry comes alive the first Saturday of each month at 2 PM with readings performed by a creative mix of artists. Participants are invited to read a piece for Open Mic during featured poets intermission.
Registration is required for this in-person event.
Parking is free at the Central Library Garage on Saturdays. The garage entrance is on Lamar Street, between Smith and Bagby.
This series is organized by Public Poetry and is presented in partnership with Houston Public Library.

Until 2007, Elina Petrova lived in Ukraine and worked in engineering management. She published two poetry books in English (Aching Miracle, 2015, and Desert Candles, 2019) and one in her native Russian language. Elina’s poems have appeared in Notre Dame Review, Texas Review, Chicago Quarterly Review, North Dakota Quarterly, Southwestern American Literature, Porter House Review, California Quarterly; anthologies by presses of Sul Ross State University, Lamar University and elsewhere.
Saba Husain is a Pakistani-born American poet. Her work appears in Arc Poetry, Bangalore Review, Barrow Street, Bellevue Review, Houston Chronicle, On the Seawall, Sequestrum, Reunion: The Dallas Review, The Aleph Review, Texas Review, Natural Bridge, Glass Poetry, Jaggery and elsewhere. She was a finalist for the 2023 Perugia Press Prize, finalist for the 2021 and 2020 X.J. Kennedy Poetry Prize, and won the 2022 Hot Poet Spring Equinox Poetry Contest. Saba serves on the board of Mutabilis Press. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Creative Writing from University of Houston. Her debut poetry collection, published by Terrapin Books in 2023, is titled Elegy for My Tongue.
Jeremy Eugene is a poet and educator currently teaching high school English. He is of Trinidadian heritage and resides in Houston. He is a two-time member of the nationally-acclaimed Houston VIP Poetry Slam team. His work has appeared in The Griot: The Journal of African American Studies and is forthcoming in Carceral Liberalism. He hopes to inspire and motivate social change with all of his work."
Diego Nguyen was mentored by former Texas poet Laureate Jenny Browne. He graduated with an MFA from Miami University in 2022. His controversial public persona is characterized by his extensive tattoos, legal issues, and publicized political feuds.
