Public Poetry Reading Series Online
Poetry comes alive the first Saturday of each month at 2 PM with readings performed by a creative mix of artists. Participants are invited to read a piece for Open Mic during featured poets intermission.
Registration is required for this virtual event. The Public Poetry Reading Series uses the Microsoft Team platform for virtual meetings. Participants using their smartphones or tablets will need to download the Microsoft Team app to participate. Participants using their computers will not need to download the Microsoft Teams app.
This series is organized by Public Poetry and is presented in partnership with Houston Public Library.

Maya Clubine is a writer and artist from the Canadian East Coast. She is an MFA candidate at the University of St. Thomas (TX) where she received a Scanlan Fellowship. Maya has published in Rattle, The Literary Review of Canada, Modern Age, The South Shore Review, and Ekstasis, among others. She is a member of the Common Milkweed Collective. Her chapbook Life Cycle of a Mayfly received the 2023 Vallum Chapbook Award. Maya can be found at mayaclubine.ca.
José Chapa Valle is a US poet raised in Mexico, or vice versa. He authored Notes from the Last Age (FlowerSong Press, 2020) and two other books of poetry. His work in English has appeared in the Acentos Review, Eye to the Telescope, Star*Line and elsewhere. Some of his poetry in Spanish can be found in the digital archives of Luvina, Periódico de Poesía, Caelum, and Tierra Adentro. He lives in Katy, Texas, where he works as a leadership development facilitator, sans degree.
Dorsía Smith Silva is the author of In Inheritance of Drowning (CavanKerry, 2024), poetry editor of The Hopper, and Professor of English at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. Her poetry is forthcoming in the Beloit Poetry Journal, Cimarron Review, Los Angeles Review, and elsewhere. She is also the editor of Latina/Chicana Mothering, and the coeditor of seven books. She has received support from Bread Loaf and the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing. She is a member of the Get the Word Out Poetry Cohort of Poets & Writers in 2024 and has a Ph.D. in Caribbean Literature and Language. She posts on social media @DSmithSilva, and she is thrilled that In Inheritance of Drowning is on the booklist of poetry books to read for fall 2024 by Publishers Weekly.
Detrick Hughes resides in Houston and is the author of eight collections of poetry and two spoken word CDs, including 2020 Unsuitable for Fools (Nebo Publishing) and the recently released 2024 Spread (Pen and Leaf Press).
