World on the Move: Learn about the History and Preservation of Freedmen's Town

World on the Move: Learn about the History and Preservation of Freedmen's Town In-Person

Learn about the origins and history of Freedmen's Town, Fourth Ward; Juneteenth history in Houston; urbanization and gentrification of Fourth Ward and surrounding areas; and efforts to protect and preserve Freedmen's Town, from a speaker from the Houston Freedmen's Town Conservancy.

Freedmen's Town, Fourth Ward is not just a historic place - it is a living legacy of hope, resilience, and Black excellence. It is where the journey from slavery to self-determination took root in Houston after Juneteenth. Created in 2018, the Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, aims to protect and preserve the history of Freedmen’s Town for the benefit of future generations. The Conservancy’s role is to “Tell the Story of Freedom” by educating and engaging visitors through heritage tourism from around the world about the unique and revelatory history of this largely untold chapter of Houston’s and America’s past.
