Hair Weeved Through Community: The Franklin Beauty School during Jim Crow era Houston

Hair Weeved Through Community: The Franklin Beauty School during Jim Crow era Houston Online

Join us virtually as Daylen Heidt uncovers the inspiring legacy of the Franklin Beauty School! Founded in Texas in 1917 by the visionary Madame Nobia Franklin, this school offered hope and opportunity. Though briefly in Chicago, it relocated to Houston and thrived under the guidance of her daughter and son-in-law, J.H. Jemison.

More than just a school, Franklin Beauty School became a lifeline for the Houston community, especially young Black women navigating the challenges of the Jim Crow era. Through archival records, this program explores how Franklin Beauty School empowered Black women to break free from limited domestic labor roles while turning the generational hair care skills into thriving careers and a path to economic independence.
