Our Elders Are Our Libraries In-Person
Join us for Our Elders Are Our Libraries, honoring the wisdom, stories, and living legacies of African American elders who have shaped Black Houston. Inspired by the African proverb, “Every time an elder dies, a library is burnt,” this event—created by Dr. Lindsay Gary and supported by The Idea Fund—celebrates elders as our most vital living archives. The program will feature the premiere of the project's documentary short film and a Council of Elders conversation, bringing together film, oral history, and intergenerational dialogue.
This program will take place within The New Red Book Exhibit, curated by Dr. Lindsay Gary, creating a powerful, immersive connection between the film, The New Red Book, and the exhibition. Many of the featured elders are directly connected to the historic sites, organizations, and stories documented in The New Red Book, making this gathering both a celebration and a living continuation of the work. Through storytelling and shared reflection, this program affirms the essential role elders play in our communities while helping to close the intergenerational knowledge gap created by colonial disruption. Come listen, learn, and bear witness as we honor those who carry our histories—and ensure their wisdom continues to guide future generations.
Dr. Gary's project is made possible with the support from The Idea Fund. The Idea Fund is a re-granting program administered by DiverseWorks, Aurora Picture Show, and Project Row Houses and funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
