Linking Queer Houston History: an LGBTQ+ History Month Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon In-Person
Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) is collaborating with Art + Feminism and Houston Public Library to host Linking Queer Houston History: an LGBTQ+ History Month Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon.
This is a free, open to the public, and volunteer communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to gender, feminism, and the arts. This session will focus specifically on queer history from Houston, captured by KPRC-TV and preserved by TAMI. All levels of knowledge and experience are welcome. Program coordinators and helpers from TAMI and Art+Feminism will provide tutorials for the volunteer attendees, reference materials, and facilitation. There will be training, editing, and breaks scheduled in. Food and refreshments will be provided.
In order to participate in editing Wikipedia entries, participants must have a Wiki account. If attendees do not have a Wiki account, please create one prior to the event. New accounts cannot edit immediately, and more than five accounts created on the same internet connection may trigger editing restrictions. To create your account, follow this link: auth.wikimedia.org/enwiki/wiki/Special:CreateAccount. Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords.

The Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to discovering, preserving, providing access to, and educating the community on Texas’ film heritage. TAMI's online library features thousands of moving images, including home movies, amateur films, advertisements, local television, and industrial films created in Texas - safeguarding the collective memory of all Texans. Through the Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives: Amplifying Unheard Voices grant awarded by by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), TAMI has taken on the digitization and cataloging of, as well as public access to, more than 250 films and videotapes documenting Houston's LGBTQ+ community from the KPRC-TV Collection.
Art+Feminism builds a community of activists that is committed to closing information gaps related to gender, feminism, and the arts, beginning with Wikipedia. Art+Feminism envisions an internet that reflects diverse global histories of art-making, where communities who have most often been written out of history feel welcome and empowered to participate in writing (and righting) our stories.
