Bearing Witness: August Wilson in Houston
Bearing Witness: August Wilson in Houston explores the ongoing relationship between August Wilson's work and the city of Houston through Alley Theatre's history of producing his plays and engaging the community around them. Inspired by Wilson's belief that theatre is a gathering place where audiences come together to witness shared stories, the exhibition brings together archival materials and production images to highlight how his work continues to resonate across generations.
The exhibition traces key moments in Alley Theatre's history with Wilson's American Century Cycle, from early productions of Fences, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Seven Guitars, and Jitney to present-day community programming inspired by his work. Visitors to the exhibition can connect Wilson's roots in Pittsburgh's Hill District to the cultural histories of Houston's historic Black communities and ever-evolving creative ecosystem.
