Join us for a special artist talk with Houston-based papermaker Kathy Gurwell of Fine Hand Made Paper. As part of the current Paper and Printmaking Exhibition on view at the Central Library, Kathy will present The Mark of the Maker, an Oscar nominated documentary short that explores the art and craft of handmade papermaking.

The film tells the story of Twinrocker Handmade Paper Mill, founded by Kathryn and Howard Clark, whose work helped spark the revival of hand papermaking in the United States. While studying at Wayne State University in Detroit between 1970 and 1972, Kathryn pursued a master's degree in Fine Art Printmaking and Howard studied Industrial Design. During that time, they recognized that high-quality handmade paper was no longer being produced in America, forcing artists to rely on imported papers from Europe. Determined to change that, they established Twinrocker Handmade Paper in San Francisco in 1971 before relocating the mill to Brookston, Indiana, in 1972, where it continues to operate today.

Following the screening, Kathy will share insights into the history, techniques, and enduring significance of handmade paper, drawing on her own experience as a papermaker.
